We are hearing more and more about yoga in the media lately, with many high profile people advocating yoga as the ultimate recharge - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Yoga, as a system, extends beyond physical postures, to include breath control, mediation, sense withdrawal and ethical guidelines. Making use of yoga postures to relieve stress and aEileen in Camel posenxiety puts you in touch with a tradition that can take you as far as you want to go - whether that is a regular body re-alignment and energy booster or a more profound change. While there is disagreement among yoga practitioners about whether one aspect of this system, for example the physical postures only, should be taught without the other aspects, it is often agreed that not only can the postures (along with breathing techniques) provide relief to those suffering from many different kinds of physical and emotional ailments, especially for those who develop a regular yoga practice, but there is often a gradual shift in attitudes and values towards a more simple, accepting and peaceful outlook on life.

The benefits from your yoga session will stay with you afterwards and eventually, if you cultivate a regular practice, you will develop an increased awareness of what is going on in your body and mind so that you can begin to change old negative patterns of thought and detrimental bodily habits. In other words, you "take it with you"; you integrate it.

At Yoga for Now, we aim to assist participants in our yoga classes and development programs to cultivate a range of immediately applicable and relevant skills and knowledge. These range from simple breathing techniques to clear and calm the mind, to physical stretches and posture work to help release accumulated tension and to build flexibility and strength, to strategies that help develop the means to tap into your "inner wisdom".

The word "yoga" means "union" and that is precisely what differentiates it from other remedial techniques that work on only the mind or the body. Yoga works in such a way as to bring oneself to the present moment, to "tune into" the current state of one's body and mind and to accept this state without judgement and without reaction - a crucial technique in letting go of negative stress and managing anxiety. While physical exercise generally is important to maintain health and well-being, we need more in our contemporary times. We can learn, through yoga, to develop our own centre of stillness and quietness, our own "inner sanctuary" without withdrawing from our loved ones. Yoga in particular can provide an effective way to deal with that all too familiar feeling of "stop the world, I want to get off!" without totally losing control and damaging yourself or others.

At Yoga for Now we are committed to delivering services that use the insights of Yoga in practical and relevant ways to meet the needs of contemporary organisations and individuals.
